Dior - Predication for FL2000 style & color

Summarize:

Working process
At the beginning, our group try to source for many different bands & designed to focus on Prada for our project “ Brand “. But after our deeply research, we find the color used for Prada is relatively limited ( mainly Brown, Black, Khaki ) & difficult to apply our creativity to use & learn more color. At last we choose Christian Dior as the band for our project.

Christian Dior have a strong image of using different kinds of color. It act as a fashion leader to guide the whole world fashion in both color & style. We talking Christian Dior, most people first impression are their funky Couture clothes designed by John Galliano.

John Galliano is very creative & clever designer who can apply many colors together but in a very well proportion & value to attract audience. His design are very colorful, we can say that every color have been used by him. When I do the research for his collection, I never feel boring for his Ready To Wear or Couture collection because each season he bring me surprise on the wide range of the color used.

From the previous research, we find the below color scheme are mostly used by him,

  1. Analogous & Monochromatic scheme are commonly used for RTW to provide the harmony
  2. Complementary colors are also commonly used in both RTW & Couture to bring surprise us on the color match which usually used in accessories.
  3. Adjacent complementary & Triad color scheme are sometimes used

As we know the black is the important color which Christian Dior emphasizes of his Fashion World. All collection in each season must apply Black on the outfits. Also per my previous research, various Red & Blue are also commonly used at each season by just changing in different value & density. That why for my forecast color on Dior will also included these 3 color ( Black, Red & Blue ) but changing the value to matched with the Theme.

Final Collection for Christian Dior Fall Winter 2010

Theme
The main theme of this series of fashion is “get back to teenage”, which is specially designed for the ladies who has already been working in the society for years. The reason for choosing this theme was that most of the working beauties were facing different kinds of pressure, no matter from work, from life or from elsewhere. Looking backward, when we are still teenagers, everything seems easy, happy and under little pressure. We laugh for happiness, cry for sadness, and were enjoying everyday of our life. Very often we may dream of getting younger and back to teenage, enjoying the happy life once again when we feel frustrated. Because of this reason, we had designed this series of casual dressing for them; hope that they can retrieve their teenage by putting them on.
Youngsters always give us the feeling of “energy, vitality and enthusiastic”. This was spontaneously come from their words, their action and from what they dress. So how can we create the feeling of “energy, vitality and enthusiastic” on fashion? This requires the matching of the color, the cutting, the chose of materials and the printing of the clothes.

Color
For coloring, we have change the value of the 3 main color to black, sky Blue & Passion Red which applied color theory is the principle of familiarity, we also adopted plenty of sharp, warm and cheerful colors such as yellow, orange and red to bring out the sense of energy and active. The Green is also added to highlight on print pattern or accessories to become the "second wife " of the main color. On the other hand, in order to carry through the tradition of Dior’s fashion and to shows respect to our grate founder of Dior who has bring the black color into fashion, we also apply black color in some detail parts of our fashion. The mixture of black and other colorful colors could increase the contrast of the clothes, helps to spot out the main color theme to bring out our focus idea more effectively.

Silhouette
For cutting of our clothes, we mainly designed to make it loose and relax, unlike the tight and slim design of those business suites. The collar and the cuff of the sleeves were specious with button-free design. The bottom dresses were also designed to be wide with wave-shaped pattern. The relax and specious cutting of our fashion implicitly reflect the life of teenage, which should be free and comfort.

Material
In order to match with the main idea of relax and comfortable, we use primary light and soft materials such as silk and cotton when making our fashion. Aim at giving surprises to our customers, and to match with the characteristic of teenagers which is brave to try new things, we also introduce some new materials which are seldom used in fashion before. For example, we use jute rope as belt, and to use crepe paper as material for hats.

Print Pattern
I have the research that John always use print to the outfit, but the resent collection SP09 just apply in Monochromatic plain dress. It is the time for Print fabric back!!? In order to emphasize our idea of “Young and Passion” through the printing of the clothes. Many child-like hand drawings and writings can be found on our fashions, creating a feeling of childhood, and a wish of enjoying a simple and happy life. At the same time we also bring out our brand name “Dior” in an implicit way through the printings. Our brand name may hide in the drawings naughtily, or print on a covert place of the clothes.

After analysis the brand " Christian Dior " with our group member, we have come up the main color family for our brand. Which also useful for our future forecasting on Christian Dior.

Sketch Drawing & Color Trying

When I know this project need to present with illustration & try to apply different color to the outfits, is really up-set that I can foresee my grading should be very very low because of my poor drawing & " primary " sense of fashion/color. It is really a big big challenge to me. Robert! Pls don't mind my stupid drawing, I already try my best to use, to try the color on the outfits. And try to mix & match differnt color to see if any surprise to find " a group of perfect matched color ".

Dior - Pattern Observation

Emphasis on Pattern

After analysis the whole collection for Christian Dior, we find that the print pattern are always apply on the outfits. No matter in Analogus, mono chromatic, triad color scheme or Complementary color scheme. Designer usually use print pattern attract audience attention.

Material - Fur
Fur is also commonly used for John's collection. Sometime in natual animal color and sometimes dyed in sharp color which matched the season theme.

Like to use Animal Print
In the 1940s, Chrisitan Dior's friend Miss Mitza Bricard suggested him to make animal prints on ladies wear. In 1947, Dior launched a collection as African forest and became the first designer who promoted animal prints to the world. In the recent seasons, we also find the animal print are always use in John's collect. Most of them are in Natural Animal Color.

Dior - Various of Blue

Use Various of Blue
Blue are also commonly used for John's collection. We can see designer always use Monochromatic scheme to apply blue. Beside, Analogus color scheme are apply for FL02, 03 & 04.
Others, Triad color scheme apply for SP05 ( mainly in Blue, but use red & yellow as trim or accessory )
For FL09, Adjacent complementary scheme are also used ( Blue, Vioet & Yellow ). John very clever to use different sharp color in well porpotion & good value to prevent too contrast among complementary color.

For advertising & accessories, blue is also the important color which Dior would like to promote.

Dior - Various of Red

Used various of Red in collection
For every season, designer use various of Red into the collection. From the above outfits from 02-09, we find most of the Red are used in Monochromatic scheme. Also, John always use the yellow or Green hue to match with the Red clothe which is also a kind of Adjacent complementary scheme. For the complementary color ( Green /yellow ) against Red are commonly used for the accessory like hangbag / scarf at FL04 collection.

" Red " also commonly used for accessory in both main body or the trim part.

Dior - Important of Black

Before the Dior’s appearance, BLACK is always a heavy color that gave people feeling of serious, formal, boring and tradition. But Dior apply a lot of black in his natural New look designs. Through his hand, black also can represent strongness, touch, modern image of post-war women. Christian Dior changed the social culture, made BLACK became a fashionable color at that time.

When we look at the posters of Dior, we can see designer always use black/ use a large proportion of black in the picture to present the mood of feminine and sexy.

From the above, we find the advertising, packages, interior designs of Christian Dior. Although Dior products are dedicated and colorful, however, her advertising and interior designs are simple. The background color are always in deep and high value colors, esp. aromatic colors – black, white grey…The reason behind is these colors will not be too attractive, so that to emphasize the product more.

Class exercise 4

In this color family, the Triad color schemes is used. the Blue, Red, Yellow is the three hues equally spaced on the color wheel, a three-hue format with primaries color in definitely value provide contrast color with energy, young feeling.
To avoid all colors are to sharp which " jump out" to create uncomfortable feeling to people, we also used the Black, White & Grey ( the Achromatic color scheme ) to low down the value of different sharp color which bring the audience more easy to accept to the whole collection.

Class exercise 3

As the product colors are quite colorful, I used the Black, White & Grey as the main color for the fixture of this boutique. I use the black color for the wall & floor, the white shelves & also the grey tray to holding the products. This can catch the focus of customers from highlighting the colorful bags, wallets & shoes.
On the other hand, I put a sharp - shocking blue - carpet at the middle of the boutique which match back to the sharp color of the products at the shelves. The carpet can also provide a contrast color against the fixtures to prevent boring to the customer when they walk in. For the color theme of this season is " warm color " like red, orange & yellow, I will use the " cool color " blue carpet. If the color theme for the next season changed to " cool color", I will then change the carpet to " warm color " to provide some contrast color from the products.

Class exercise 2

In this collection, I mainly used the Monochromatic color scheme in one tone with various of Brown shades ( Brown, Ivory, White & Grey ) for the whole collection.

To prevent boring, I have also added the blue color which is the complementary color of the brown ( orange hue ). It is what Robert said " the second wife " of the main color.

To follow the " principle of Resemblance " which states that colors harmonize more when the difference between them are less. I have also changed the value of the Blue & brown in the same to make the collection looks more harmony.

Class exercise 1

For these 2 Pakistan men, we find that the brown color is commonly used for their outfit.
The Pakistan man in right hand side wear Almond shirt & a pair of brown shoes with a grey trousers & white stock.
The Pakistan man in left hand side wear white/grey stripe shirt & a pair of brown trousers with black shoes.
The Monochromatic color scheme is used for both men, only one hue with various of brown shades is used. Also with their dark brown skin which provide a boring feel to me!

Both girl & boy are aged around 20-25, they both apply Achromatic color schemes on their whole outfit. This is very comment for Hong Kong people to wear.
For the girl wear a white shirt & gray legging with a black handbag & white plastic bag.
For the boy wear a black T-shirt with white pattern , a pair of grey jeans & white Converse shoes.

Both bring us feel harmony, to aviod boring, both of them putting on the accessories in Brown ( the brown belt for the girl & the brown bag for the bay ) to matched with their whole outfit.

1946 After World War II ends, Dior persuades the industrialist Marcel Boussac to back him in the opening of his own couture house to be managed by the civil servant Jacques Rouët.

The house of Dior and its 85 employees moved into a modest mansion at 30 Avenue Montaigne which was decorated in Dior’s favourite colours of white and grey.

1947 On 12 February Dior presents his debut couture collection, which is an instant success dubbed the ‘New Look’ for its voluptuous silhouette and luxurious fabrics. Launch of the first Dior perfume, Miss Dior.

Dior’s approach to design was equally pragmatic. Resisting the temptation to experiment, he adhered to his luxurious look with the structured silhouette of padding, starch and corsets, which was so flattering to his middle-aged clients.

CD cosmetic store in Macau Airport

This is one of the store of Dior located at the international airport of Macau. The main color theme of this store was black and white, which are the favorite color of Christian Dior, the founder of the brand "Dior". By using black and white as the main color in the store, it can shows the contrast for their cosmetic, which are mostly very colorful.
